Pie chart misuse reaches new level of awfulness

I've seen some terrible graphs in my time, but this is just ridiculous.

that is astonishing.

In a similar spirit of 'Oh God why must such weapons be put in the hands of the foolish', here are some more graphs (http://www.flickr.com/photos/7855449@N02/sets/72157606844282993/) (as passed to me by Mr [livejournal.com profile] infov0re).

"flashturbation" on the "wheel of marketing misfortune".

Also I would not agree at all with their contention that genius is the overlap of "manic" and "depression".

[identity profile] friend-of-tofu.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You are a genius.

The OMG-WTF Spectrum (http://www.flickr.com/photos/7855449@N02/3158864420/in/set-72157606844282993/) is just perfect for this, I think.

I also like the social experience one - "The Basics (often broken)" - hee!

I think I may have to show this to A. later, so he can steal them for presentations and run a sweepstake on how long it takes people to notice...

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
dude, i, i think these are, like, SRS BSNS...

[identity profile] friend-of-tofu.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, but the OMG-WTF Spectrum can hardly help being a *bit* comedic, right? I mean, come on. Inherently funny.

(I was disappointed when I looked at them for that reason at first, until I realised that actually made it more amusing.)

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
yes i think some of them are "ho ho, us social media types can rly laff at ourselves, eh", rather than funny per se, although the OMGWTF one is teh funneh, yes.

[identity profile] friend-of-tofu.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh *that* tee-hee-self-aware stuff is rather painful. And eye-gouging. It's the accidental bits - I just could NOT help thinking of Fran & The Flipchart ("We're here. We want to be here") when I looked at the Dynamic Signal one. Beyond my control. Not my fault.

[identity profile] friend-of-tofu.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, thought: do you think this is Fox Heads On Sticks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mnVWJpMhuE) territory yet?

you (or rather Mr Armano) have broken my tiny mind...

What are you on about, 193%* is a completely normal size for a pie chart! It's just a bigger pie than usual!

*F@ck, I hope I counted that right or I'm going to look like a complete knob, aren't I?

the 'Dynamic' bit is a typo!

Ow ow ow, my eyes are bleeding!

Why didn't I heed your warning? I thought I could cope with anything, but that really is the limit!

It's a failed breeding experiment between a pie chart and a Venn diagram!

[identity profile] martinskidmore.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Could people support more than one candidate? If so, the figures may not be wrong - but putting them into a pie chart was an appalling idea. Also the modern tendency to tilt pie graphs to make them 3-D makes the segments at the bottom look larger than equally sized ones at the top, which defeats the whole point of such a chart.

[identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I didn't think the figures were wrong, it's the (presumably kneejerk) use of the pie chart that was upsetting.

BSc. Econ. Hons IR

I thought this was about the Oscars for about 30 seconds.

(using my film knowledge last updated in about 2003, obviously)

Re: BSc. Econ. Hons IR

[identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
My film knowledge is so rub that I can't even work out how that would be plausible!

I get the impression the couple in this film would now be following Mr. Armano on Twitter, but sadly I never saw it (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0356721/)

[identity profile] piratemoggy.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
2003 probably not the right year; I mean 'I saw a word loosely connected to films in my head and decided to override the word 'presidential' with that concept.'

*facedesk*

Although obviously not as big a facedesk as the piechart's creator.

[identity profile] pippaalice.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
How is this possible?

The rat control the cook!

[identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I suspect what happened was that everyone polled was asked which candidates they would back, rather than which candidate. So they could pick more than one, which is why the pie chart seems to show 193%, which is why they should have used a bar chart instead.

[identity profile] uon.livejournal.com 2009-11-30 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
There is only ever one correct use for a pie chart (http://www.etre.com/blog/2006/11/pacman_piechart/).

In a sense...

[identity profile] hoshuteki.livejournal.com 2009-12-01 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like pie charts quite so much as PIE.

[identity profile] plumsbitch.livejournal.com 2009-12-01 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
pie chart=WTF

associtions with PIE = that's more like it/the only possible gain from exposure to teh above horrors
